Are people in general, NOT just children become too materialistic today?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7262936.st...

QUOTE %26quot;Some 89% of adults in the GfK NOP survey of 1,255 people believed today%26#039;s children were more materialistic than previous generations.%26quot; UNQUOTE

Is there a NEED for a person to have over 30 pairs of shoes for instance?

Don%26#039;t get me started on pets.... !!!!!! If dogs were meant to wear clothes and jewellery they would have 2 legs and not be called a dog !! The ONLY thing a dog NEEDS is a dog lead and a muzzle today - to keep Health and Safety happy when it%26#039;s out in public ;-)

QUOTE %26quot;The Lap of Luxury

High-end items to spoil companion animals are must-haves for pet owners that spare no expense to please their furry, feathered and finned best friends. Items include faux mink coats for cold weather outings, feathered French day beds for afternoon naps, designer bird cages, botanical fragrances and to top it all off, a rhinestone tiara! %26quot; UNQUOTE

Defiantly, I remember when I first married we had everything second hand, when we eventually were in a position to replace item by item the tat we had, I got such a feeling of delight and pride, what a shame that in the immediacy of modern day people do not have this sense of achievement.

I think this song explains, in part why this culture floursihes:http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y2nRYykk6aY
Reply:I concur with the Community Choice. Just too busy to get back and choose it myself for Best Answer. Thanks one and all for much interesting craic here Report It

Reply:And what is wrong with materialism?? Nothing - it motivates people to get up and work for what they want. Those losers who don%26#039;t achieve much are the ones who moan about the world becoming %26quot;too materialistic%26quot;. If you want it, go out and make the money to get it, otherwise shut up, keep your envy to yourselves and leave the rest to get on with their %26quot;materialistic%26quot; lives.
Reply:Yes, too much stuff altogether.

If you%26#039;ve got some time watch this - http://www.storyofstuff.com/ - it%26#039;s fascinating!!
Reply:If you give me £10 i will tell you.
Reply:Yes, materialism has gone rampant.

It%26#039;s a substitute for love, in many cases.

The declining economy may bring minimalism back?
Reply:too many people buy stuff on credit they cant afford to impress people they dont like.

I like the simple things in life,I dont buy labels for me or my kids,as long as I have what I need Im happy %26amp; Im bringing up my kids modestly.

I have been called cheap %26amp; nasty by one chav lol

I call myself budget buffy!

I saw a chav in asda buying ten scratch cards with a credit card.lol go figure that out I dont even have a credit card when them people try to get me to sign up for one I say no thanks it aint called credit for nothing.
Reply:To much watching of Cribs on MTV I think, it is all bling now bling on your wheels bling on your tv room. so has to get to the pet, bling on the pet now.
Reply:It%26#039;s all the fault of credit cards, the welfare state, and our capitalist society. We%26#039;re not taught to value money.
Reply:Materialism has been the State religion of the US since the 19th century and the UK adopted it when we became an American colony in the 1950s.
Reply:I believe that the problem stems from simply too many things being available to desire and want. If you look at more recent history such as the Victorian period, life was very simple in comparison but you could just see the seeds of progress in technology and manufacturing. Plus the inception of social benefits and the like has given life to a more even playing field for lots of people and people have the money to do a lot more, particularly younger folk. Plus of course commercialism is simply the way most people earn their money and pressures build up to promote business and this has a natural effect on material wants ..... and the biggest contributor to all this? Advertising! You can%26#039;t get away from it .... the media has mushroomed in the last 100 years and the materialism that is spreads is unfounded. I beilieve therefore that people, kids and animals are the victims here, if that is the right word, although greed is undoubtedly the emotion of the century, whether it be material things or simply power, and that is global!
Reply:name one person you know that isn%26#039;t materialistic. *nods* there%26#039;s your answer.
Reply:No. Some people are more materialistic than others and always have been.

It is easier to have more %26quot;material%26quot; things now than in the past ie. credit, ease of shopping.

Easier for ordinary people.

If u look at palaces and castles from the past then look how many objects were in these places and the luxury and splendour that adorned these buildings.
Reply:I totally agree, AND much more violent.!
Reply:It is not just materialistic, moreover it is SELFISH!

People have more money to spend on themselves and what they want! Generally, the population wastes money whilst stepping over their fellow humans forced to sleep rough on the street!

The more wealth some people have to waste, the more poor people there will be; the only thing that has changed is one persons charity to another; the modern affluent are too tied up in themselves to give a **** about the greater populous....they are too selfish; the worst of all being the so called baby boomers whom seem to being trying actively to take EVERYTHING for themselves (how ever irrelevant what they think they want is) and leave future generations having to pay for it!

There is a good example of this in my Family, I have made my own money (I have had to), in the past though my Family has passed wealth down from one generation to another (even if it meant suffering for themselves, they wanted something better for their Children), this worked fine until My Father! A baby boomer he has set about decimating all Family assets for his own gratification so that he leaves his Children and Grandchildren with nothing! My Wife%26#039;s family are the same, living the high life on the money that their Parents passed down! My friends Parents have gone further, getting themselves into debt to fund an extravagant lifestyle that their Children will probably still be paying off when THEY finally retire!

Hard times are comming and alot of people are in for a very big shock, but I doubt even this will counter the selfishness of our society; lets face it, even the Government has sold the Country for their own short term gain! Everyone thinks this attitude fine and actually defend it....

.....the misery won%26#039;t be theirs though, it will just be their legacy!
Reply:Theres a Budda quote I always liked going something along the lines of

%26#039;you may crave a beautiful object, but once you have had it in your possession for a while it fades in its wonder to you%26#039;

I only have three pairs of outdoor shoes, I enjoy the order in minimalism

And my sheepdog will never own any by the way!
Reply:Watch shopping channels like QVC for more than 10 seconds and you%26#039;ll see exactly what they mean about materalism.

I still buy my clothes from charity shops and I%26#039;m not ashamed - I have to because that%26#039;s all I can afford!
